Something I’m Reading

I’m still working through The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss which I absolutely adore. It’s my favorite fiction book I’m working through right now.

I also recently purchased the Elon Musk biography from Ashlee Vance which I will likely start soon so stay tuned for that!

Something I Teach

Today, while on vacation in the mountains, I had 3 hours of back to back phone calls. During the 1st one, I saw my kids going outside to play in the heavy snow (something they’ve never really done).

I thought to myself “I’ll go out when I’m done with the 3 hours of calls” but then also thought, “They won’t be outside that long...”

Then I realized…what’s more important? So I texted my 2nd call, asked to move it back 20 minutes, ended the first one ten minutes early…and boom. I got to play outside with my kids for a half hour.

The lesson is: ask yourself, “What’s most important” and find ways to fit everything else around it.

Something I’m Excited About

Snow! I’m enjoying some time in my house in Coeur d’Alene and taking a break from the Hawaii heat…I miss the warm a little bit though :)

Something I Can Answer
Every week, I answer one question asked by a BTB subscriber. Have a question you want me to answer? Reply to this text with your question!

Question: “How do you come up with new goals to set? Do you ever struggle with new things to go after?” - Steve

Great question! Here’s my process:

I always start with a vision of what I want my life to look like 5-10 years in the future. Then I dial that back to what I want my life to look like 1 year from now. I typically break my life into different categories like business, family, spiritual, health, etc.

Then I look at my life and rate each category 1-10 of how I’m doing in that area. The three lowest categories I prioritize yearly goals around that align with my long term vision.

I don’t leave it there though. I set quarterly goals that align with my yearly goals and then set habits that should help me accomplish the quarterly goals. This results in daily actions that should result in hitting my yearly and 5-10 year goals.

Your Friend,
