Something I’m Reading

I’ve been re-reading and re-listening to a classic: the original “Game of Thrones” book, “A Song of Ice and Fire”. An entertaining read if you’re looking for a break from personal development or nonfiction.

Something I Teach

When times get hard, a lot of people retract, driven by fear. This is true right now in regards to raising money for real estate deals. If half the people suddenly no longer wanted to invest with you, you might be tempted to shrink back and only do half as many deals. But I’d encourage this: double down. Get better. Double the number of prospects who might invest and do the same. Maybe even grow during periods of retraction. This will make you stronger, and when things return to normal baseline, you’ll be twice as strong and that will carry forward for years.  This is what I’ve been preaching to my team at Open Door Capital, and we’re working some strategies now that will benefit us for decades to come. Are you getting stronger or are you caving to the pressure?

Something I Photographed

This napkin decided to wear the same outfit as me… #awkward

Something I’m Excited About

Just flew out of Maui today and headed to northern Idaho for some “lake life” with the family! Also - ODC is hiring for SIX new positions (and all are remote). Check them out here and come be a part of the ODC family!

Something I Can Answer

Every week, I answer one question asked by a BTB subscriber. Have a question you want me to answer? Reply to this text with your question!

Question: “I’m a newbie to real estate investing. How can I overcome my fear of taking action especially with the uncertainty of the market?’”

Let’s talk about fear, and I’ll cage it inside a metaphor: While driving through dense fog, you can’t see a mile down the road but you can usually see 50 feet in front of you. This 50 foot area is your “zone of clarity.”  As you move forward down that road, you can always see another 50 feet. So don’t worry about seeing everything. That’ll cause fear, which will cause you to stop. Instead, keep driving, and that ‘zone of clarity” around you will keep moving with you.

In other words: focus on the next step, and when you accomplish it, you’ll see the step that follows. This is how you overcome fear: one foot at a time. Just don’t stop.

Your Friend,
