Something I’m Reading

I just finished reading "Tomorrow, and Tomorrow and Tomorrow” by Gabrielle Zevin. It's a popular book and was recommended to me by Jay Papasan, who wrote "The One Thing”. It was a very well written fiction book and I really enjoyed it.

The kids had a lemonade stand. They made more in one day than I made my first 16 years of life combined. :)

Something I Can Answer
I’ll be answering two questions asked by a BTB subscriber. Have a question you want me to answer? Reply to this text with your question!

Question: "What are some tips to help build your networks?”

Number one: Be real, be YOU! Authenticity is the name of the game, folks. Don't put on a facade or try to be someone you're not. People can smell inauthenticity from a mile away. So, embrace your quirks, show genuine interest in others, and have real conversations. You wanna build those meaningful connections, right?

Next up, tip number two: Give, give, give! Networking ain't just about what you can get; it's about what you can bring to the table. Be a valuable resource for your network. Share your knowledge, lend a helping hand, or connect people who can benefit from each other. It's all about being a rockstar supporter and creating win-win situations. The more you give, the more you'll receive!

And last but not least, tip number three: Nurture those relationships like a pro. Building a network is like growing a beautiful garden. You can't just plant the seeds and expect them to flourish on their own. Water them, tend to them, and watch them bloom. Stay in touch regularly, grab coffee or hop on a call, attend industry events to meet new folks, and always follow up. The more effort you put into maintaining your connections, the stronger and more fruitful they'll become.

Question: "How did you find your investing niche?

I talked to a lot of people. I started by following in my mentor’s footsteps by buying small multifamily properties. Over time, I listened to a lot of podcasts and I interviewed a lot of people. I discovered that certain things appealed to me and there was something inside me that responded well when people talked about mobile home parks and self-storage. When I built Open Door Capital, we started with mobile home parks because I had to pick one but I knew I would eventually get into apartments and self-storage and in fact, right now we're buying all three.
