Something I’m Reading
I’m currently reading “Simplicity Parenting” by Kim John Payne and Lisa Ross. Written before the iPhone was even invented, this book is all about the PTSD that we are giving our kids from an overload of information and other stressors.
Something I Photographed
“It was a little sunny outside for Wild Man. But I love taking this little boy to Home Depot. Such a fun ritual between father and son.”
Something I’m Excited About

Something I Can Answer
I’ll be answering two questions asked by a BTB subscriber. Have a question you want me to answer? Reply to this text with your question!
Question: “How do you motivate and inspire your team to achieve their best?”
I inspire and motivate my team in 3 ways:
1.) First, I have a very clear vision of where we are headed. (At ODC, we're gonna buy $10B of real estate over the next 10 years.)
2.) Second, I have a couple of very clear missions that we talk a lot about: a.) This is the last job you'll ever have to have if we go where I plan to go, and b.) We are going to give away $1B to fight human trafficking and other needs.
3.) We use the EOS system (made popular in the book Traction, by Gino Wickman) to establish goals for each member of the team. This system allows each member to set their own goals (which make people WAY more motivated than if I give someone a goal) but also ensures those goals line up with the company goals and vision.
Question: “Do you chase the deal? Or do you chase your sweet spot (SF, MF, Commercial, etc)?
I love to surf. There’s just something powerful about being out in that open ocean, waiting for the perfect wave. But here’s the thing: waves don’t break consistently in the exact same spot. The surf wave moves around randomly, and a big part of surfing is being in the right place at the right time. Of course, if you’re in “generally the right area,” the wave will come eventually and you’ll catch a good one. You just have to be patient.
But inevitably, when I’m waiting for this wave, I begin to look around, up and down the beach, for a better spot. And then I spot a wave a few hundred feet away where it seems like the wave is way better there. So I abandon my position and begin the long paddle to that "better spot." After 10 minutes of hard paddling, I make it to the new spot only to discover that the wave isn't there anymore, and, in fact, it's breaking exactly where I just was. I wasted all that effort. So I paddle to another spot where I think is good, and the wave is gone when I arrive there also. Soon, I'm too tired to paddle much more, so I paddle into the beach and accept defeat.
The moral of this story, of course, is that this is how many people approach real estate and wealth-building in general. There's always a better wave, and they abandon what they know will eventually work if they are patient enough. They chase deals rather than focusing on becoming the best where they are.
Now, sometimes the wave truly does die in your spot and you need to move. That's life. But 99% of people move because of a lack of patience, not because of a lack of deals.
So to answer your question: chase excellence, not deals.
