Something I’m Reading

I’m still working through “The Power of Place” by Daniel Grothe. I read a part of this book every morning and have been enjoying it. I mentioned this book two weeks ago but if you missed it, it’s focused on building community and "roots" where you live and being intentional about it.

Something I Teach

One of my biggest fears in the my business journey is losing motivation. I’m not worried about the tactics or the industry - I know both will work. I fear losing motivation to execute on those. This is the same for anything. I know how to lose weight but I lose motivation after dieting for a few months.

So I’m a big proponent of protecting my motivation.

In other words, I am continually finding ways of being renewed. There’s a great quote from Zig Ziglar who said, “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing, that’s why we recommend it daily.” I need continual refreshment in my spirit toward motivation. I do this through small groups, masterminds, accountability groups, and hanging out with people that are doing way more than me so I am continually inspired. So my challenge to you is how can you protect and renew your motivation? What plans do you need to set in place to periodically renew your motivation?

Something I Can Answer
Every week, I answer one question asked by a BTB subscriber. Have a question you want me to answer? Reply to this text with your question!

Question: “Is there anything you had to unlearn when you first started your entrepreneurship journey?”

I’m a big believer in mentors and learning from people who have come before you. However, the downside about that is whenever you learn from those who come before you, you tend the see the world through their eyes and their biases. There’s nothing wrong with that but it can be limiting.

For example, if your mentor is a house flipper, you will see real estate as a house flipping business. Or if you mentor is a syndicator, you will see the world through the eyes of an apartment syndicator. My mentor was a small time landlord who had a couple dozen rentals and managed most of it himself and did most of his own work. Therefore, that’s how I started my real estate journey. I have no regrets about and it got to where I am today. However, when I wanted to get to the next level, I had to unlearn the DIY mentality and find additional mentors to change my mindset. I unlearned DIY and had to learn leadership.

Your Friend,
