Something I’m Reading

I’m still working through the book “Fooled by Randomness“ by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. It’s been a good read so far and digs into the how we work with “luck” in life and business.

Something I Teach

On a podcast I was listening to the other day, the host mentioned, "Your deepest desires aren't always your strongest desires."  What a powerful quote! Like, deep down, we want freedom. We want to be good partners and parents. We want to feel fulfilled. Yet, the strongest desires tend to be either a.) distractions or b.) the most urgent thing on our plate.

So, my encouragement to you all, and myself, this week: define what your deepest desires are, and ask yourself: how does your calendar line up with those desires? How can you bring them more into alignment?

Another day in paradise!

Something I’m Excited About

Open Door Capital just underwent a makeover on our logo and website. It’s a nice upgrade from before - check it out. It’s just in time for our next offering right around the corner (hint hint: it will be a mobile home park fund 👀).

P.S. If you need a new logo, website, branding or anything, check out our friends Brand & Brush. They’re great!

Something I Can Answer
Every week, I answer one question asked by a BTB subscriber. Have a question you want me to answer? Reply to this text with your question!

Question: “What is your #1 tip to increase productivity?”

In "The One Thing" by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan, they mention a concept called “Goal Setting to the Now.” The idea is this:

Look out many years into the future, maybe 10 years. Where do you want to be?

Now ask yourself, “To be on track for that goal, what do I have to accomplish THIS YEAR?”

Then, ask yourself, “To be on track for my one-year goal that I just set, what do I have to do this quarter?”

Then, “To be on track for my quarterly goal, what do I need to do this week?”

Then, “To hit my weekly goal, what do I have to do today?”

And Finally, “To be on track to hit my daily goal, what do I need to do RIGHT NOW?”

I often refer to this as my “MINS” - Most Important Next Step.  When you do that “Most Important Next Step”, you are moving closer to the person you’d want to become. This is my favorite productivity trick because it’s not just making you “productive” - it's making you EFFECTIVE on your quest to lead a better life.

More From Me
Links to podcasts I’m on, guests I speak to, or valuable content where you can hear more. These aren’t “sponsored posts” - just more resources!

While I was in San Diego, I joined the hosts of the REIA Radio podcast to record an episode with my friend Megan “The Tatty Investor” Ahern. We talked through the importance of masterminds, how to “Fail Forward”, work-life balance and how to “set rules” and more. Give it a listen here!

Your Friend,

P.S. Comment below and let me know your thoughts on this week’s BTB! Please be friendly :)
